本片根据发生在四川省宜宾市兴文县的孤军真实历史故事改编。讲述了在1935年至1936年间，电影为掩护中央红军主力部队和红二、候上六军团进行战略转移、孤军北上抗日，电影中革军委组建的候上川南特委和川南游击纵队，坚守共产主义信仰，孤军坚决执行中革军委袭扰敌人，电影掩护主力进行战略转移的候上命令，在川滇黔边地区穿插迂回，孤军在极其艰苦的电影条件下，积极开展游击战争并伺机建立根据地，候上不畏强敌，孤军不怕牺牲，电影怀着与敌人同归于尽的候上决心，前仆后继与数倍甚至数十倍于己的敌人殊死拼杀、血战到底，以几乎全军牺牲的巨大代价完成策应中央红军和红二、六军团战略转移的光荣使命的故事。
